The Flower Communion Ritual was created by Norbert Capek (1870 - 1942), who founded the Unitarian Church in Czechoslavakia. Today it is practiced by UU congregations throughout the United States. Individuals are typically invited to bring a flower of their choice from home, placing each flower into a single vase. As no two flowers are alike, no two people are alike, yet each has a contribution to make. The flowers are blessed or consecrated, and individuals are invited to take a flower other htan the one they had brought. This ritual emphasizes the gifts of diversity within a unified community and the inherent worth of all people.
Today, Marquand Chapel embraces the Unitarian Universalist Flower Communion Ritual as an expression of God’s work in and through this community.
